Intersecting Wrinkle Ridges

After lava flooded and filled the mare basins, forces squeezed the volcanic basalt rock together and it broke and buckled into a complex pattern of wrinkle ridges that zigzag through the dark mare. Three wrinkle ridges, and their underlying faults, come together here in Mare Frigoris, forming an unusual triple junction. The interaction between the shape of the basin and the forces that contracted the volcanic rock that filled it may be responsible for this intriguing intersection.
