Young Fault Scarp

This prominent lobate fault scarp is one of thousands discovered in LROC images. Cooling of the still hot lunar interior is causing the Moon to shrink, thrusting crustal materials upward into cliffs or scarps. Amazingly a now degraded 350 m diameter crater was uplifted and deformed as the fault moved. Boulders in the crater have aligned in rows that parallel the orientation of the scarp. We do not know exactly when this feature formed, but it is very young in terms of lunar events; likely less than 100 my.
