Vikram Lander Found

Vikram impact point and debris field — Vikram impact point and associated debris field. Green dots indicate spacecraft debris (confirmed or likely). Blue dots are locating disturbed soil, likely where small bits of the spacecraft churned up the regolith. "S" indicates debris identified by Shanmuga Subramanian. Longjiang-2 Impact Site Found!

LROC NAC image of new crater, likely from Longjiang 2 impact — The Longjiang-2 spacecraft (also known as DSLWP-B) crashed onto the lunar farside on 31 July 2019 after completing its orbital mission. Flyover of Chandrayaan 2 landing site from Quickmap — The Chandrayaan-2 lander, Vikram, attempted a landing September 7th Indian time (Friday the 6th in the United States), on a small patch of lunar highland smooth plains between Simpelius N and Manzinus C craters. Unfortunately the landing was not successful and location of the spacecraft has not been announced. The scene above was captured from an LROC Quickmap fly-around of the site, image width is about 150 kilometers across the center [NASA/GSFC/Arizona State University].

Apollo 11 had three sites selected from five finalists — In 1969, NASA published a map showing candidate Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 landing sites. The map was based on photographs taken using large Earth-based telescopes. The map above, based on an LROC global image mosaic, is a near-copy of that historic map. Red dots represent the five candidate Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 landing sites as of February 1968. Yellow circles represent the final three Apollo 11 target sites. The green circle marks Site 2, the Apollo 11 prime site in Mare Tranquillitatis, where the Lunar Module Eagle actually landed [NASA/GSFC/Arizona State University].
