Craters of Different Ages

Lunar impact craters range greatly in size, shape, and age. Very young craters like Giordano Bruno are the most pristine. They have the greatest difference in height (topographic relief) between their rims and floors and the steepest slopes on their rim walls. With age, the relief and the slope on walls decrease because of relentless meteorite bombardment. Derived from LROC images, these 3D models of four different craters show this progression from a young, fresh crater to an old, heavily degraded crater. 3D printed models courtesy of NASA/GSFC/Arizona State University
