Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera

Color of the Moon

Description:

The Moon may look black and white to the naked eye, but the Wide Angle Camera's sensitivity in the ultraviolet and visible wavelengths reveal a palette of colors. The subtle variations in color seen here result from differences in the age and chemical composition of the surface. In this three color composite red shows 689 nm, green is 415 nm and blue corresponds to 320 nm.
